OUR WORK

The work of the BBJC is divided into three focus areas: Direct Legal Services, Technical Assistance and Community Education and Engagement. The BBJC works throughout the historic Black Belt region of the southern United States, which comprises thirteen states: Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Florida, Louisiana, Kentucky, Maryland, Mississippi,

North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.

was awarded the 2013 National Day of Service Award by Essence Magazine.

OUR PURPOSE

The Black Belt Justice Center (BBJC) is a legal and advocacy nonprofit organization dedicated to assisting African American farmers, landowners and communities in the Black Belt region in efforts to retain and increase landownership; to create sustainable land-based cooperatives and entrepreneurial businesses; and to ensure intergenerational and community wealth.

In 1910, African Americans collectively owned over 15 million acres of rural land, compared to current figures of less than 2 million acres.
